Growing up, Lindsey Boler loved to play school. So she set up a back-to-school mini session using props from her childhood, including an old desk and school books from her aunt. For this image, she wanted a social butterfly for the model and a sassy, 1960s, “Grease” style. “Neely was the perfect little model to portray the look I was going for,” she says. “She loved her Chuck Taylors and glasses.” What pulled the image together was the title, she says, which she came up with after the retouching was completed. Lindsey Boler’s Red Elephant Studio is based in Scottsville, Kentucky, and specializes in newborn, baby, and child photography.
CAMERA & LENS: Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L lens
EXPOSURE: 1/160 second at f/5.6, ISO 200
LIGHTING: A main octabox was camera left, a silver reflector was camera right, two kicker lights with grids were on each side slightly skimming the subject, and there was a 10x20-inch hair light.
POST-CAPTURE: Boler used Adobe Photoshop CC, Google Nik Collection, and Imagenomics in post-production. The model’s hand on her hip was pulled from another image, the map in the background was straightened, and then highlights and lowlights were adjusted.
