“Let Me Fix Your Scarf” is a composite of two photos, one made in Thomasville, North Carolina, where Larry Hersberger, M.Photog., is based, and one in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. One winter day in 2015, Thomasville had 9 inches of snow—“very unusual for this part of the South,” Hersberger says. Having watched the forecasts, Hersberger was ready—he’d lined up clients for child portraits in the snow. The day it fell, he and his staff built life-size snowmen to serve as props. It wasn’t until later that the concept for “Let Me Fix Your Scarf” came together. “While driving through the mountains of Kentucky, it began to snow heavily,” Hersberger explains. “The light, ambiance, and depth were perfect.” He stopped his vehicle and captured the moment, knowing the image would composite perfectly with his snowman shot.
